Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
